Description
Subject: Maths
A Maths Event Day has run for the past seven years every June at the University of the West of England (UWE). The idea is to have 150 students attend a day whereby they:
- learn what mathematicians do in the real world (4-6 companies, ranging from Airbus to Lloyds, come and give a 15 minute presentation each about what maths graduates do in their company)
- attend workshops of 50 mins (one am and one pm)
- attend a one-hour lunch session at which the universities in the area - Bristol and UWE - give out information about the types of degrees on offer
- attend a lecture to enthuse them about mathematics in general. In the past, workshop leaders have come from UWE, Bath and Bristol universities. At the time of implementation, many students were choosing AS mathematics but were not proceeding to A2 level. The event was to encourage them to continue with their mathematics study.
Target Audience
AS-level mathematics students.
