Lead Institution: University of Bristol
Collaborating with: Graphic Science, Lighting Up Learning Ltd
Through adoption of the Enhancing STEM Academics' Public Engagement Skills project, the School of Chemical Engineering at University of Birmingham took the training and support provided to: up-skill a member of staff in primary schools' outreach; up-skill 3 PhD students in the design and delivery of primary schools' outreach; and to design and deliver 3 new outreach workshops targeted at years 5 and 6 pupils. These workshops focused on: renewable energy, engineering emulsions and the physics of flight.
The adoption activities at Birmingham were led by Emma Carter (Byrne Student Liaison and Outreach Officer; e.l.carter@bham.ac.uk). Find out more in the case study below.
Birmingham Outreach
Emma identified the following highlights of taking part in the project:
1. Meeting people from other universities and hearing how they are doing outreach
2. Receiving very useful training in effective science communication for primary school age children
3. Working with PhD students in the department to develop workshops
4. Piloting the workshops in a very enthusiastic and positive primary school
Please find below a case study of Birmingham's engagement in the project. Should you like to know more, feel free to contact Emma at e.l.carter@bham.ac.uk.
