Through adoption of the Enhancing STEM Academics' Public Engagement Skills project, the University of Bradford took the training and support provided to design and develop two new outreach activities - one for primary schools (Steam Boats) and one for secondary (Health from Honey Bees).
The adoption activities at Bradford were led by James Machell (Education Development Officer; j.machell@bradford.ac.uk). Find out more in the case study below.
Bradford outreach
James identified the following highlights of taking part in the project:
1. Collaboration between Nicholas Garrick of Lighting Up Learning and Ed Drewitt of the Bristol Dinosaur Project as well as others from differing universities at the three adopter seminars in the development of new workshops
2. Enhanced consultation with local primary schools
3. Development and trialling of Primary and Secondary Workshop for Health from Honey Bees
4. Development and trialling of Steamboats workshop
5. Shadowing of Bristol ChemLabs in Bradford school visits. Shadowing helped those involved to expand their experience of Chemistry in primary schools as well as key skills – e.g. taking measurements and making predictions.
Please find below a case study of Bradford's engagement in the project. Should you like to know more, feel free to contact James at j.machell@bradford.ac.uk.
