On 2nd November 2011, 30 outreach practitioners from across universities and professional bodies met at the Science Learning Centre South West in the @Bristol building to network and share best practices across STEM disciplines.

During the day attendees had the opportunity to attend parallel workshops in Maths, Chemistry, Physics and Engineering outreach organised by professional bodies and also, heard from the following key speakers:

  • Bryan Berry - Outreach Activities at At-Bristol & the Science Learning Centre
  • Dr Graeme Atherton – The Impact of Widening Participation Initiatives on the Attitudes of Young People from Backgrounds Under-represented in Higher Education
  • Ed Drewitt – Peer Review at the National History Museum
  • Wes Streeting – Widening Participation in the Changing Educational Environment
  • Dr Alison Rivett – Outreach Activities for Primary Schools

I was very impressed to learn about the resources available for schools outreach

Dr Graeme Atherton's talk on WP was engaging and facilitated a lot of discussion

The practical activities helped to illustrate how the activities worked and how much fun they were

It was good to learn about research regarding physics branding and gender differences

It was a good opportunity to discuss ideas with interesting and varied parties
