Case study 4: Employer involvement in the STEM HE curriculum
This case study describes how Petroc's Sports Department provided a real world project for second year Foundation Degree Computing students that involved a significant amoutn of programming as well as experience of being customer focused.
The project involved creating a website that would allow pupils from different schools to upload their tag rugby results onto a ‘Petroc Tag Rugby mini web site’ where they could be sorted along with the results from other local schools, schools competing nationally and internationally.
Student feedback is testament to the potential impact on employability skills of this kind of real world project: "As well as an improvement in technical ability, I gained some valuable experience during this project especially in regards to communicating with a project customer. Whereas I have had plenty of experience in working to a deadline, listening and meeting the requirements of a real customer was relatively new to me".
