Becoming a STEM Enthusiast - Outreach & CPD Video Resources

The Becoming a STEM Enthusiast project produced a range of resources to help:

  1. Provide activity ideas to outreach practitioners, teachers and staff developers as to how they might use the free video resources
  2. Raise awareness of the project and its video outputs both internally at Exeter and nationally to interested parties.

These resources are listed below. It is hoped that they will support the uptake of the resources and provide inspiration for those looking to introduce a similar project into their own institution:

Activity ideas for Teachers

The below document outlines 2 activities utilising some of the outreach videos, which could be used by teachers in schools:

  1. The STEM student experience - the purpose of this activity is to gain a greater awareness of University life and STEM degree courses
  2. A circus of STEM - the purpose of this activity is to get groups of students to think around specific STEM roles

Activities for Staff Developers

The below document outlines 2 activities utilising some of the staff development videos, which could be used by staff developers in HEIs:

  1. STEM Teaching Toolkit - the purpose of this activity is to develop strategies and tools to encourage active learning
  2. Teaching STEM through Research - the purpose of this activity is to develop strategies and tools to incorporate research interests into undergraduate teaching programmes

Activities for Outreach Practitioners & STEM Ambassadors

The below 2 documents outline a total of 4 activities utilising some of the outreach videos, which could be used by a range of outreach practitioners and ambassadors:

  1. Engaging Level 3 learners in STEM subjects - the purpose of this activity is to raise awareness of studying STEM subjects and to ensure that learners are clear about the meaning of the term, “STEM”
  2. What to expect from a STEM degree - the purpose of this activity is to get learners to think around various issues surrounding the study of STEM at university
  3. Researching STEM subjects - the purpose of this activity is to raise awareness of University research
  4. STEM subjects and employability - the purpose of this activity is to raise awareness of the knowledge and skills that can be developed through studying a STEM degree

Project Flyer

The below flyer was utilised to promote the project around the University of Exeter at its start, in order to generate interest amongst academics and students in taking part in video interviews.

Presentation

The dissemination strand of the project also involved numerous presentations to relevant audiences / networks as a means to increase awareness of the videos. The below powerpoint gives a useful overview of the project from start to finish.

Conference Poster

The project team produced a conference poster highlighting the aims, progress and future intentions of the project. The poster was used at various events and institutional seminars, and included images from key interviewees.
