A study of the key drivers in workforce engagement with HE level provision in the Aerospace sector

Lead Institution: University of the West of England

This is a sub-project of Progressing from labour market intelligence to HE level provision that is well supported by employers

Project outputs > Case study 1 Employer engagement - internal processes

This case study was undertaken to identify some of the problems faced internally when HEIs try to deliver learning to industry.  This activity was conducted early within this HE-STEM project, in the Summer / Autumn 2011, at the University of the West of England, Bristol; since then, there has been a major internal restructuring which will help with some of the issues arising.  This document will be used with UWE to identify further areas for review.

The issues are recorded in this case study to provide a simple guide to other potential HEI Continuing Professional Development (CPD) providers.  Not all HEIs will face these problems – and all will be able to identify issues of their own.  Nevertheless, this guidance ought to be of some help.

Interviews were conducted with representatives of:

Module Providers – internal and external

  • Marketing
  • Faculty / Industry Liaison
  • IT Services

It should be noted UWE does have much good practice when working with employers.  With a more united approach, it should become much easier to offer a “complete package” to employers to enhance engagement and long term relationships.
