Project Outputs > Introducing PAL

Early in the development of the Peer Assisted Learning: In and beyond the classroom project, a couple of pieces of work were commissioned to help 'set the scene', as follows:

PAL Literature Review

The paper that can be downloaded below gives a useful introduction to PAL and considers two different types of peer support - horizontal and vertical. The paper also outlines the benefits of PAL, such as:

  • Pedagogical advantages - e.g. improved performance
  • Widening student retention
  • Increased cohesion of the student group
  • Increased confidence etc

The paper discusses online models of PAL, which inspired further related work by the project.

PAL - A Literature Review

PAL - South West Mapping Exercise

The paper that can be downloaded below explores the extent to which PAL is utilised in HE and FE organisations across the SW region and identifies the different models of PAL being used. This work proved useful when other institutions looked to adopt the PAL model during the latter stages of the project.
