This is a sub-project of Get STEM working: innovation with employer and student engagement
The checklist has been developed to be a useful resource to all universities that collaborate with industry for undergraduate STEM projects, but has particular relevance to the University of Exeter. We are currently working to embed this checklist in the student project assessment process for Engineering, saving the assessors time in having to research every project proposal themselves. After trialing the checklist in Engineering, we plan to roll it out to be used in Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics and eventually to Camborne School of Mines.
The informal network of staff working with industry for student modules within the College has now been established, and staff have expressed interest in continuing to meet to discuss the best methods to approach industry and share relevant contacts. Staff members new to engaging with industry for student purposes will be invited to any future meetings to learn from existing knowledge. One member of the network has received an Exeter Annual Fund grant to develop a College database of industry contacts from student modules, and this should be available to all other network members once completed.
Student employability is high on the agenda, and improving our industrial links through all possible streams is a key factor in this, with students gaining real-world experience, as well as improved industrial links bringing their own benefits. Senior College management are committed to supporting the improvement of student projects and similar employer engagements.
