Project Outputs > Case Study - Starting a Maths Cafe

Bath's Maths Cafe

Bath's Maths Cafe

Inspired by discussions at the first seminar for Transition & Induction Experiences of WP Students project in June 2011, the University of Bath established a Maths Cafe in the 2011 - 2012 academic year. The focus of the cafe was to:

  1. Provide a welcoming space in which students from different STEM subjects and years could socialise and develop their problem solving skills simultaneously
  2. Support the transition and retention of first year students

In its design and development, the Cafe drew upon similar schemes at the University of Greenwich (Maths Arcade) and the University of the West of England (Espresso Maths).

The below case study outlines the experience at the University of Bath of establishing the Cafe, lessons learnt and plans for the future.
